Identify Weed Types – Know the Enemy

A weed is basically defined as a plant that is growing where you don’t want it to be. It’s an enemy on your turf. Let’s learn more about the enemy and how we can identify the weed names to properly kill them. The problem with most weeds is they can handle mowing just like your grass and often have less requirements to survive. That means it’s a lot harder to get rid of them. One of the nastiest weeds is the sandspur aka the grassbur. The worst problem is the sharp, spiny burs that are painful and can be hard to get off clothing. The sandspur is known as a summer annual weed. Read on to find out what that means.

Lawn Weed Identification

Weeds are charted into categories of similar characteristics to identify them. The first thing that needs to be done is to identify the weed and learn how it operates. Then you can more effectively defeat it. This is war baby! Weeds have different life cycles including annual, biennial, and perennial. Annual weeds live for only one year and then produce seed to grow back the next year. Biennial weeds live for two years. Biennials can also spread through rhizomes and stolons, so you have to make sure to kill the entire plant. Perennial weeds have a life of at least three years. Perennials are the hardiest and most tenacious of weeds. Some examples of perennial weeds are white clover, quackgrass, and dandelion. The best way to identify weed types is to look at pictures. You can find an abundance of weed pictures on Google’s image search.

Weeds are also characterized by their look with narrowleaf and broadleaf weeds. Narrowleaf weeds look and act more like grass. Crabgrass is an example of a narrowleaf weed. Broadleaf weeds are all the other weeds that don’t act like grass including clover, chickweed, and dandelions.

The last form of weed identification is the season that the weed grows. Weeds are either cool season or warm season. Cool season grows during the spring or fall and warm season during the summer. Vines can be a serious problem in the summer time if you have them. As far as location is concerned, California and Oklahoma have a difficult time with weeds. Here is a list of the most common weeds to identify:

  • Crabgrass
  • Goosegrass
  • Barnyard Grass
  • Foxtail
  • Golden Rod
  • Sandbur
  • Quackgrass
  • Tall Fescue
